Direct-to-device (D2D) competitive field

12-monthlast moved 2026-08-20

NEW [08-05]: company-neutral home for the D2D land-grab, split out of the AST thread which had become the de-facto catch-all (brief authors flagged "no clean match for a carrier-side D2D JV" on 07-20). SCOPE: multi-operator/carrier D2D structure — MNO D2D JVs (the reported 3-US-carrier NTN JV), Verizon/AT&T D2D-partner moves, Skylo/Big-LEO D2D filings, and "D2D supply abundance" datapoints that feed SpaceConnect's COM(2026)311 argument. Company-specific execution stays on its own thread (AST → AST thread; Amazon D2D → Amazon Leo / 2 GHz MSS; Starlink D2D → SPCX). Force tag: D2D & spectrum. Score on a named carrier commitment or a new funded D2D architecture. NEW [08-07]: FCC unanimously adopted an NPRM (ET Docket 26-169) opening ~200MHz unlicensed spectrum (2.4/5.8GHz; dropped the contested 900MHz band after NextNav pushback) for D2D — zero MSS-license requirement, directly feeding SpaceConnect's "D2D supply is abundant" argument against SES/Lynk's 2GHz MSS bid (see 2 GHz MSS thread). Comment clock starts on Federal Register publication (30/60-day), not yet set. NEW [08-14]: MDA's "SPACERAN" partner-funded sovereign D2D/IoT LEO filing (on its own AURORA bus, no thread home as of 08-09) gets its 2nd datapoint — Telesat's CEO confirmed on its Q2 call "conversations with a number of parties about what role Telesat could potentially play in a D2D constellation" (opportunistic only, "not... our principal area of focus"), and sell-side analysts are now asking rivals about it directly, the corroboration priors was waiting for. NEW [08-20]: Amazon's Kuiper D2D application formally entered FCC pleading process (DA 26-866, Sep17/Sep28/Oct5 deadlines) — a 7th funded D2D architecture (after Starlink, AST, Skylo, EchoStar/SIRION-1, Lynk/Elveo, Amazon's own intent) reinforces the "D2D supply is abundant" argument feeding SpaceConnect's 2 GHz MSS opposition.
