A Chinese Long March 6C rocket upper stage broke apart in low Earth orbit, adding to a pattern of Chinese rocket-body fragmentations.

LeoLabs detected the fragmentation of CZ-6C (NORAD ID 100472) at 2:30am UTC on Aug 27, 2026, in a 396x482km orbit, generating an estimated tens-to-hundreds of debris fragments (SpaceNews, "Long March 6C rocket stage fragments in orbit, creating cloud of debris," 2026-08-28; corroborated by LeoLabs' own post, surfaced via @pbdes's retweet on the X mirror). This is at least the second documented CZ-6-family upper-stage fragmentation this year (an ESA Space Debris Conference paper from earlier in 2026 analyzes "recent CZ-6A rocket upper-stage fragmentations," plural) — a recurring reliability issue with the workhorse rocket family China uses for LEO deployment generally, including Guowang/Qianfan missions. This desk carries no thread for Chinese launch-vehicle reliability or the orbital-debris risk it poses; the closest read-across is to SES's own growing LEO exposure (IRIS²'s 330-satellite LEO layer, service from 2030) operating in an increasingly debris-dense low-Earth environment. MDA's "SpaceRAN" Direct-to-Device constellation plan surfaced in full detail for the first time — but the ITU paperwork behind it is 47 days old.

A GAO watchdog report puts a number on how little the Pentagon coordinates its commercial space-data buying.

GAO-26-107959 found the Space Force spent ~$124M on commercial space data/services from Jan 2023-Sep 2025 (62% through its Joint Commercial Operations cell), while NRO spends an estimated $300-500M/yr and NGA $25-125M/yr on the same category — and flagged a "Cross-Government Commercial Data Sharing Working Group" that most offices eligible to use it don't know exists.
