SES leads its first Space Force programme of record

K2 Space (Torrance, CA) announced a $500m Series D on 2026-07-30, led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ with CapitalG, Lightspeed, Altimeter, Spark Capital, Sands Capital, ARK Invest, T. Rowe Price Associates and existing investors participating, valuing the company at $6.8bn — more than double its $3bn valuation from December 2025. The funding is earmarked to expand production capacity toward building up to 100 large satellites annually; K2 states it has signed over $1bn in government/commercial contracts and raised over $1bn in total capital. Per SpaceNews (Sandra Erwin): "K2's largest disclosed commercial project is tied to a planned SES communications network in medium Earth orbit" (meoSphere — priors already track 28 K2 platforms ordered March 2026). Separately and newly disclosed: "K2 was also selected as a satellite-bus provider for the Space Force's Protected Tactical Satcom-Global program, its first role in a formal Pentagon program of record. Under that effort, K2 will provide a spacecraft to a team led by SES Space & Defense." The planned satellite is described as delivering protected, anti-jam GEO communications for military users in contested environments. Anduril Industries (space-based interceptors for Golden Dome) is also named as a K2 customer.
